Hello dear rose friends … every day, something lovely happens in this business and today we’ve laughed like mad at an email from early this morning.  Jenni placed an order and amidst the names, she asked for the rose called “Molly Know”, I emailed back that I had all the other roses, would open the order but was very curious about this “Molly Know” rose … had she seen it in a magazine or whatever?  The return email explained that she had seen the rose in our gardens the weekend prior …  Of course, she wants to order the David Austin rose:  “MOLINEUX” - we’ve had some funny challenges over the years but I reckon “Molly Know” might be the one I’ll write about … how funny!!!
This will be a seriously ‘newsy’ Rose Rambler so if you haven’t already done so, grab a cuppa …

SUPPORTING CLIMBING ROSES…  So you’ve got an ugly wall or nosey neighbours or maybe, you’ve seriously run out of garden space so you’ve decided to go up!  All great situations for planting a climbing rose but whatever you do, get some advice about the variety of rose you should plant and what support you should build for the rose.  It might look ‘cottagey’ and quaint but most usually, timber lattice is not ideal unless it is reinforced with steel mesh since the timber lattice (which is only stapled together!) usually lasts less than a couple of years - might as well ditch the timber lattice and go with steel mesh!

Three star posts and a five metre length of “sheep yard mesh” (purchased from Elders 20 years ago!) has been a fabulous support for climbing roses and clematis in front of the timber fence in the front garden here at the nursery.  In that time, the timber fence was renewed a few years ago and if I had had the climbers directly on the old fence, they would have, highly likely, ended up in rose heaven … there aren’t many fencing contactors who’ll go out of their way to preserve a thorny rose … they would rather pillage and burn!  Planting them on a support (which you really can’t see now anyway!) has allowed great air-flow through and around the climbers as well as being a very reliable support for the roses … and hey girls … you can do this yourself!

If you’re needing to go ‘up’ then I recommend a steel pillar support … you can get really fancy steel obelisks that cost an arm and a leg but a handy husband who can weld three or four posts together with a few steel rods would do the job!  Here at the rose nursery, we stock four-legged steel pillar frames - not fancy but extremely sturdy and practical - short $79.50 and tall $97.50.

The arches we stock will outlast most of us and they’re only $285.50 and 2 metres wide … the small arches which you have to DIY assemble will be on the pile at the transfer station within 5 years - especially if they have a large climber over them!  If the archway isn’t wide enough, you can bet on it that people will find a way to go around the arch so take width into consideration when placing an arch in your garden!

NEW ROSE LIST NOW AVAILABLE …  An updated version of our ‘Rose List’ is now available at our website:  www.silkiegardens.com.au

If you’re not computer literate and would like to receive a copy of the ‘Rose List’ by mail, please send us a stamped, self addressed envelope and we’ll be more than happy to post one out to you.

BARE-ROOTED ROSES THIS WINTER …  Did you know that we post roses all around Australia except Western Australia?  If you’re planning to plant new roses this Winter, let us help you design your garden.  With our help, you can be assured that you’ll get great results .. you’ll get the right height, colour, fragrance and style of garden you want!  It’s truly easy - all we need are some dimensions, aspect, your likes and dislikes;  photos of your house are helpful too!

For those who don’t live close, you can e-mail silkiegardens@bigpond.com or post us all your details and we can consult with you to ensure you get 100% what you want!!!

WATER SMART GARDENS & HOMES REBATE SCHEME …  This Victorian Government Scheme ends on 30th June, 2011 and we have all the information brochures available at the Nursery.  Please remember to ask for a receipt when you purchase the Rich River Lucerne Mulch and the very popular BOKASHI indoor composting system which we stock - the rebate available is $30.00!

I believe that the BOKASHI indoor composting system should be mandatory in all homes .. it is the most effective, clean, practical and downright sensible composting system I’ve ever managed - the fermented waste improves the soil and the liquid can be used as plant fertilizer - all this goodness from the kitchen scraps which you would normally toss into regular garbage and thus contribute to the massive 8.4 million tones of organic material which goes into landfill in our beautiful country!!!

If you live in Mitchell or Strathbogie Shires, there is a Sustainable Communities Program being conducted until 11th June, 2010 and local residents can be reimbursed $25.00 when you purchase a BOKASHI compost system … now is definitely the time to invest in this fabulous composting system - with the rebates, your entire outlay is only $24.00 and you will create the most rich and moisture-retaining soil in your garden!!!

ROSE PRUNING & GARDEN CARE SEMINARS …  We don’t encourage pruning your roses before the middle of June at the earliest and in the really cold zones, as late as mid-August is good timing!  If you think you need a bit of professional advice on how to prune your roses this year, why not book in and come along to one of our demonstrations …

SATURDAY, 12TH JUNE - 10.00AM
SUNDAY, 20TH JUNE - 2.00PM
SATURDAY, 26TH JUNE - 2.00PM
SUNDAY, 6TH JULY - 10.00AM

Please bring your ‘little gardeners’ along because it is our experience that the children love to help in the garden and we can include them in the Seminar!!!  You are welcome to bring your secateurs with you and we will demonstrate good sharpening and cleaning methods.  BOOK NOW - CALL 1800 821 990.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN YOUR ROSE GARDEN NOW …?  Amazing that we all complained about the lack of water when it didn’t rain … my, how lovely were the roses during the dry times?  Your roses will be the same as everybody else’s - looking like they’re ready for a good Winter spell.  The blooms are spoiled from the rain, the foliage is probably black-spotted and yellowing and that’s all very natural with the wet weather we’ve been experiencing so cut off the spent flowers so that the bushes look tidy and wait for June before you get into serious pruning.

Once you have pruned your roses in June or later, it will be imperative that you immediately commence your organic spray management program, yes, even on bare ‘sticks’!  Spraying the mulched ground around the roses will be beneficial to stop the spread of fungal spores … at no time should you remove the mulch because the worms are breeding now through to October and they will enjoy the protection of the mulch over the soil.  A great reason to keep going with a monthly application of Natrakelp Liquid Seaweed!!
